Scholarship applications are now open for 2010. Please ensure you are using the correct application form with a 2010 closing date - all forms have now been updated.

Please note: all scholarships have eligibility requirements. Ensure you meet the minimum requirements before applying. Only applications that are correctly filled out will be considered.

AWARDS

The Nancy Bird Trophy
Donated by AWPA

This trophy is for the most noteworthy contribution to aviation by a woman of Australasia. Membership of AWPA is not a requirement. Nominations must be received in writing, with a seconder.

Applications must be received at the National Committee postal address in writing, six weeks prior to the AGM.

Sir Donald Anderson Trophy
Donated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Three trophies awarded to the top three women pilots considered to have made the most meritorious academic progress towards the achievement of professional aviation qualifications, as dictated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). CASA has also allocated monetary awards to each of the three places.

Applications are not required as the awards are determined from exam results.

Mrs. Harry (Lores) Bonney Award
Donated by the late Mrs. H B Bonney

To be awarded to a woman who completes a record breaking flight or valiant attempt at such, or who represents Australia at World Championship level, or who undertakes a legitimately recognised flight of significance in the spirit of Lores Bonney's record-breaking achievements.

The applicant must be female and a resident of Australia. Membership of AWPA is not a requirement.

Gliding Award
This is awarded for the most meritorious gliding flight carried out during the previous year, or an outstanding contribution to the advancement of gliding in Australia.
Membership of AWPA is NOT a requirement.

AWPA SCHOLARSHIPS

The Lady Casey Scholarship
This scholarship is to assist an AWPA member to obtain an Instructor or Command Instrument Rating, either fixed wing or helicopter, in furtherance of a career in aviation. In 2010 the scholarship will be valued at $7,000 paid on a 'dollar-for-dollar' basis to offset up to 50% of the costs of the rating. Criteria include being a permanent resident of Australia, hold a current Australian CPL and have been an AWPA member for at least two years.

1974 Memorial Grant
Donated by AWPA Victorian Branch

This award is to provide assistance towards the cost of a Night VFR Rating. Requirements for applicants are:

Membership of AWPA is not a requirement.

As this scholarship was donated to assist a PPL pilot, preference will be given to applicants not intending to proceed to a CPL.

The Freda Thompson and Claire Embling Aviation Award
Donated by the late Claire and Ken Embling.

To assist in the advancement of practical and/or theoretical training.

Requirements for applicants are:

This award is to assist a female pilot (resident in WA) in gaining her Private Pilot's Licence. Membership of AWPA is not a requirement.

AWPA SA Branch Memorial Incentive Award

To financially assist a current South Australian AWPA member, in any commendable aviation endeavour.

Nancy Wells Award
Donated by the Ninety Nines Inc. Australian Section

This award is provided to assist a member of the 99s or AWPA in defraying costs of CASA exam fees, study material and equipment associated with the attainment of licences or ratings required for a career or commercial involvement in aviation.

Requirements for Applicants: must be a member of the Ninety Nines or AWPA.

Airservices Flight Training Scholarships
Sponsored by Airservices Australia

Four scholarships to assist four women with flight training costs associated in gaining any level of flying proficiency from the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) stage through to a Commercial Pilots Licence. Applicants must be a member of AWPA and be at least 16 years old.

Applicants who have not yet obtained their GFPT must have at least five hours of flight training experience and be a member of AWPA at the time of application.

Applicants who have passed their GFPT and are training for their PPL or higher must have a minimum of six months membership of AWPA at the time of application.

Air Transport Pilot Licence Theory

One scholarship is offered, for a female CPL holder, to provide assistance towards the cost of an ATPL theory course.

Applicants must hold a current Australian CPL with a minimum of 300 hours total time, and a pass in the IREX theory examination.

Value: $1,000 on a 'dollar-for-dollar' basis.

PPL Charts and Documents Award
Sponsored by Airservices Australia Publications

Two awards are available, each consisting of provision of the geographically relevant charts and documents required for a Student Pilot to facilitate the navigation phase of their PPL training. The awards are provisionally to be one female and one male, however the award should be given to the most worthy applicants regardless of gender. Applicants must have a minimum of 10 hours flight time and a pass in the Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK) theory exam.

Applications MUST be received in writing by 5pm on the 31st of January annually.

NSW 2000 Edna Grose Scholarship

This scholarship is open to all eligible members of the Australian Women Pilots' Association and may be used for fixed wing, rotary wing, gliding or balloon flight. The intended use of the scholarship could include initial twin endorsement, tail wheel endorsement, constant speed endorsement, retractable endorsement, Flight Review, PPL training, CPL training, Private Instrument rating (PIFR), float plane endorsement, GPS endorsement, cross country gliding rating, aircraft type endorsement.

This list is not exhaustive and is for guidance only.

Note: This scholarship is not intended to be used to obtain a Command Instrument Rating (CIR), Flight Instructor Rating (FIR) or Night Visual Flight Rules rating (NVFR). It is intended that the scholarship be used for the attainment of one qualification only.

Applicants must meet these requirements: minimum 12 months membership of AWPA, hold a current medical, have completed GFPT (or equivalent for gliding or ballooning) or higher, hold the appropriate licence or rating to undertake the proposed flight training, and for PPL, CPL or PIFR, passes in the appropriate theory examinations (evidence to be provided).

Value: $2,000 on a dollar-for-dollar basis

Robinson Silver Wings Award

To assist a woman of 45 years or more with ab-initio training, PPL, CPL, Aerobatic or PIFR training.

Requirements for applicants: open to any female pilot who is a permanent resident of Australia and is at least 45 years of age. The successful applicant will be required to join AWPA if not already a member.

Value: Up to $1,000 on a 'dollar-for-dollar' basis

Aviation Safety Management Development Grant
Sponsored by the Australian Government through the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB)

To assist a member of AWPA who is employed as a commercial pilot to complete an aviation safety management course of study. The money may be used for course fees, course materials and out of pocket expenses such as travel and accommodation.

Value $2,000.
Applications MUST be received in writing by 5pm on the 31st of January annually.

Basic Aerobatics Rating
Sponsored by AWPA National

One scholarship to be awarded annually to a woman pilot with a minimum of 150 hours total time, to provide assistance towards the cost of a Basic Aerobatics Rating.

RA-Aus Cross-country Endorsement or Instructor Rating
Sponsored by some AWPA ACT members and friends.

One scholarship available to a women who already holds an RA-Aus Pilot Certificate, to assist with either an RA-Aus Cross-country Endorsement or an RA-Aus instructor Rating.

Value: $1,000 on a 'dollar-for-dollar' basis. The successful applicant will be required to join AWPA if not already a member.

Soaring Scholarship
Sponsored by AWPA

To assist a Sailplane pilot to enhance cross country skills, providing funds to cover retrieval costs. Applicants must be a permanent resident of Australia; hold a silver C badge and a current Glider Medical Certificate. Membership of AWPA is not a requirement and it is open to both female and male pilots.

Value: $500 on a ‘dollar-for-dollar’ basis.

Roma 2008 Award
Sponsored by AWPA Queensland

To provide assistance towards the cost of a Flight Review for either a fixed wing or helicopter pilot. Requirements for applicants are:

- The first award is for Queensland members only.
- The second is available to a member from any other State or
Territory of Australia.

Value: $500.00 for each award

Awards and Scholarships that are on a ‘dollar for dollar’ basis require the applicant to pay 50% of her training costs.  Therefore the recipient contributes the same amount to her training, till the value of the award is expended.
